QinetiQ are currently working with EASA on an EU-funded Horizon 2020 programme, investigating mid-air collisions between drones and crewed aircraft. It is an ambitious programme that builds upon QinetiQ’s world-class expertise in drone collision modelling and testing, and aims to fill knowledge gaps that are critical to maintaining high standards of aviation safety.

Up to 5 modern drone designs are being considered in the study and each one has been developed into a validated model for Abaqus Explicit. These drones are combined with a wide variety of aircraft models, to evaluate collision scenarios against a large matrix of down-selected target features such as leading edges, windshields, rotor blades, propellers etc.

This presentation will outline the analysis work being undertaken using Abaqus, and also describe how Dassault Systèmes’ cloud computing service is being used to accelerate the work when local computational capacity and license availability becomes a bottleneck to delivery.
