When starting a PLM initiative many companies take a functional approach. “We want to be able to do this and that”. Others are more mature and start with the business needs. However it is very rare that companies take a value-based approach. People involved need to ask themselves “What is the value that our initiative will add to our business?” And very important: “How do we measure that value?”
The great benefit of this approach is that you will get a platform from which you can measure the success of your initiative. It will also guide you in your strategic work when deciding on how to proceed. “How do I gain the most effect for the least effort?”
With a value-based approach you start with a strategic analysis that involves the characteristics of your:
- Strategic plan
- Market
- Industry network
- Products architecture
- Product planning
- Order process
- Product development process.
The analysis will penetrate questions such as: “What are the characteristics of my products and business process that make me unique? How can I use that to achieve progress in my PLM initiative? Which paths should I avoid?” The next step is to develop Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) and by that create the methodology to measure. The KPIs will aim to measure expected improvements in your business based on your strategy.
- A methodology to measure including Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)
- Support the actual derivation of data and help in measuring the KPIs on initial measurement
- A description of how to derive data and measurement in the future
