Gartner Group definition of PLM: "PLM is a process for guiding products from idea through retirement to deliver the greatest business value to an enterprise and its trading partners. PLM employs product information and business analysis to support strategy, planning, management and execution through each phase of a products life cycle. PLM supports an enterprise's ability to monitor activities, analyze challenges and bottlenecks, make decisions and execute decisions." PLM solutions brings all of a company's product-related information into one single place in order for it to be used across the whole organization, including external suppliers and customers. PLM provides the capability for multiple roles or functions within this organization to collaborate on the design, development, manufacturing, marketing, after-sales, and support of the product, along with all of the other elements of a product's lifecycle.
Right information for the right user Using PLM, product stakeholders/owners, both internal and external - can share, comment, modify and track a product throughout its entire lifecycle. The solution manages the product information and presents it in a form suitable to the user role. For example,
- Engineers would be shown a CAD (Computer Aided Design) model, via their CAD tool for further design changes
- Project Managers would be shown an overview of the projects that they are responsible for (including Work Breakdown structures, milestones, project progress, risk status, etc.)
- Purchasers would be shown which suppliers that would be able to deliver a particular product the following day, in which volumes, at which level of quality, and at what cost.
- Marketing personnel would be shown a 3D image that they could use in brochures or publications
Once implemented, a PLM solution will provide benefits that will have a positive impact on an enterprise's top and bottom lines. For example, an automotive company can shrink the time it takes to introduce new car models in a number of ways: Product engineers can dramatically shorten the cycle of implementing and approving engineering changes. Purchasing agents can work more effectively with suppliers and engineers in order to reuse parts. Finally, executives are able to see a birds-eye view of vital product information: From a particular project's progress, to the details of certain products in the manufacturing line, all the way to failure-rate statistics.
